Title Research (Mission Impossible: Fallout)

• Total of 21 titles through the sequence
• Images of shots in the movie and fire to transition 
• The shots are very action based and establish that the movie will be an action thriller.
• The shots in the sequence are of the characters in action, shooting, punching, running etc.
• It teases the audience with what’s to come in the movie and makes them wonder exactly how they came to be in those situations
• As it is part of a franchise, the movie shows already established and beloved characters that are sure to bring back audience members that enjoyed the precious films.
• Technology is used to create the effects of the fire that transitions between shots, this is all done by VFX and is completely digital, the shots are also edited using technology.

Title Research (Pink Panther)

• There are 27 titles shown throughout the title sequence.
• Images of both the Pink Panther and the detective are prioritized throughout the title sequence.
• They are quite comedical in their connotation, as they revealed as the Panther does comedical things.
• The actions of the Panther and detective are very funny, and they establish that the movie will be a comedy.
• It introduces the characters of the cartoon, but not before zooming in on a diamond, establishing a mystery, and making the audience question the importance of the jewel.
• They use the classic cartoon characters to appeal to the older audience that grew up with the cartoon show.
• The panther and the detective are both hand drawn in their animation style, and the titles seem to be shot on film instead of being digitally place. So except from the diamond at the beginning, not much technology is used throughout the opening title sequence.

Title Research (Rango)

• The title sequence displayed 36 titles throughout it.
• Images of the different animals in the movie, and different colored backgrounds.
• They have a western style font, so they are somewhat aggressive.
• There are a lot of images of the desert, and images of guns and things usually found in western movies, as well as the usage of an old western font. 
• They introduce the character Rango, as he stumbles through the western imagery shown, creating a sense of intrigue into what the movie will be about, and how it will incorporate western themes in it.
• Usage of font, color, and imagery are what stand out to me, as well as the names of some very popular actors that are sure to bring the audience into the movie even more.
• The title sequence is all CGI, just like the movie, and it is used to create all sorts of fun angles, and cuts that would not work as well in real life. Such as following Rango from scene to scene, or as he falls down through the ground, and the camera follows him. It is very effective in the way it uses technology I would say.

Title Research (Daredevil (2003))

• There are seven titles displayed in the opening sequence of this film.
• They prioritize images of NYC buildings and braille.
• They have kind of a blurry and dark connotation that make it seem mysterious, and dramatic.
• The titles are revealed from blurry braille, and the rooftops of nyc are shown, which help to reinforce the superhero genre, as they are often seen going from rooftop to rooftop.
• The images shown are blurry, and constantly moving fast, creating a sense of discombobulation in the viewer, as well as creating a mystery, as of why it was displayed in that manner.
• The character Daredevil is blind, and the title uses braille to showcase that part of him and connect with the core audience that knows that aspect of him.
• All of this title sequence is done completely digitally, so there was a lot of technology, from the virtual NYC skyline, to the text appearing on screen and slowly fading away.

Watch the Titles Website

After looking at art of the title I went to watchthetitles.com. This site also showcases title sequences from various movies, shows and other medias. The website was originally made in 2006. The main idea of the website was to showcase titles, and the people behind them. The people who made watch the title see title sequences as an artform in it of itself, and wished to show it to the world. The website was temporarily shut down in 2014, but was brought back in 2019. It is run by editor in chief Remco Vlaanderen. The site includes many interviews from many different artists that make title sequences. The interviews speak of the different movies the artists have made titles for, and why they think Title sequences are important for the movie. The website is very similar to the other one I looked at it. They also have titles from movies from all around the world. This site is also more dedicated to the actual artists. The website is very informative, and has a really great layout. I learned a lot from visiting watchthetitles.com

Art of The Title Website

I researched the website called art of the title. The website features a lot of title sequences form both movies and tv series. It is run by Editor-in-Chief Lola Landekic and is based in Toronto, Canada. Lola is a graphic designer and has had work featured in several Canadian Newspapers. She was even an invited speaker at the Smithsonian,SXSW, London College of Communication, California Institute of the Arts, and AIGA Design Conference. The website was made in 2007. It has many title sequences from recent to classical movies. The website features title from all over the world. It looks to give credit to the people who create the title sequences, and show how they affect a movie. They have a variety of titles, from horror movies, to comedies, action movies, and many more. The website allows people to learn a lot about title sequences. I for example, learned many things about title sequences that I did not know before. Title sequences are used to help set the tone and mood of the movie. If not executed well, it could mislead the audience, and create the opposite of what the movie is trying to accomplish. Titles are very important, and they are a very important part of setting the main themes throughout the movie. People who work on these sequences are very important and they deserve to get credit for their work.

Genre Research (Sicario)

CAMS

• A-  Angles commonly found throughout the movie are wide and long shots, in order to really show the action effectively throughout the movie.
• M- The movement in the movie are usually tracking shots that show them following cars, and other fast moving objects and people.
• S- A lot of diegetic sound, such as gun shooting, cars moving, and people walking.

CLAMPS

• C-  Militaristic and federal agent attire, as the people in the movie are constantly in gun fights, and are part of the FBI
• L- A large part of the movie takes place outside, and in open areas, therefore the lighting is mainly natural, and bright.
• A- The actors in the movie give a great performance, therefore the acting is quite serious, and they have to do a lot of action as well.
• M- The only makeup seen in the movie additional from that of everyday people is that of blood, or cuts that the characters suffer throughout the movie.
• P- A lot of props are used that are commonly used by people in the FBI, so guns, bulletproof vests, and other things that they would have in real life as well.
• S- The movie takes place in Mexico, so there are a lot of different areas shown, such as deserts, cities and buildings.

SOUND

• A lot of diegetic sound, such as gun shooting, cars moving, and people walking. The score is also very intense and action heavy, providing an extra amount of adrenaline in the feeling of the movie.

EDITING

• The movie is very action based, so the editing is very fast paced to fit in into that. There are plenty of jump cuts and cutaways, adding more to the pace of the movie.

ELEMENTS OF GENRE IN IT

• The movie relies more heavily than any of the others on the action part of the crime genre. And they are made from the perspective of the people who are not the criminals. They contain most of the Mis en scene found in crime movies, and fit well into the category.

WHAT I LIKED

• A very entertaining, fast pace movie that makes it very good to watch. The acting is fantastic, as is the story.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE

• The story is great, as are the actors, so I did not really have any major problems with the movie and found it a very great film to watch and study.

Genre Research (Gone Girl)

CAMS

• A- There are a lot of dutch angles used in this movie, mostly to create confusion, especially since this is a mystery movie. And there are also a lot of long shots and close ups that focus on distance and character dialogue.
• M- There were commonly a lot of tilts and zooms that focus on evidence found in the movie and further along the solving of the mystery in the movie.
• S- The sound in Gone Girl is very dramatic and sad, but it also fades into the background, making it dissolve into the back and not adding more than it had to to the movie.

CLAMPS

• C- Costumes of everyday people in current day Missouri
• L- The movie is quite dark and gray, it being a very dark movie, this lighting is very fitting and helps to create a depressing and sad atmosphere.
• A- The acting in the movie is quite sad and melancholic, but also very nuanced and intense as well.
• M- Makeup of people in current day Missouri.
• P- Things one would find in an ordinary household in the U.S. (i.e. phones, books, etc.)
• S- The setting in the movie is Carthage, Missouri in current day, and mostly inside buildings and things of the such.

SOUND

• The sound in Gone Girl is very dramatic and sad, but it also fades into the background, making it dissolve into the back and not adding more than it had to to the movie.

EDITING

• The movie feature long running shots with little cutting that contribute to the movies plot, as well as little cuts during conversations.

ELEMENTS OF GENRE IN IT

• The movie uses crime in a very different way, in a more political, or tactical way instead of action. The crime are the actions themselves and not really things commonly found in these types of movies such as murder or gun violence.

WHAT I LIKED

• The very methodical and intriguing way that the plot reveals itself, and the way that the crime genre presents itself in this movie is very interesting. The lighting is very good in the movie and very consistent, providing very great theme and mood throughout it as well.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE

• Due to the films nature, it could get a little bit boring at times, but other than that it was very interesting and a very good watch.

Genre Research (Joker)

CAMS

• A- The movie features a lot of low and high angles to demonstrate the shift in power and our importance that the Joker feels he has throughout the movie.  It also features a lot of close ups to demonstrate the Joker's personality and madness.
• M- A lot of tracking shots and hand held movements throughout the movie that seems to follow the Joker as he lives and descends into madness.
• S- The sound changes alongside the character, going from melancholic and sad, to grand and almost crazy.

CLAMPS

• C- The movie takes place during the 70's so all the characters wear clothing of that time period, additionally the Joker also wears his iconic suit.
• L- The lighting is quite melancholic and sad at the beginning, and gradually progresses to be brighter and more grand.
• A- The acting in the movie is also very serious, with Joaquin Phoenix giving a great performance, where he plays a man that goes crazy.
• M- The makeup in the movie is makeup that could be seen in the 70's, and the Joker also wears his clown makeup.
• P- Props seen in the movie are clown costumes, guns, and knives that are used by the Joker and others throughout the movie.
• S- The setting is Gotham City in the 1970's, a fictional city, the movie is shot in multiple places that resemble each other, and create the feeling of being in a city that does not exist.

SOUND

• The sound in the movie is very varied and serves as a form of storytelling as well. Diegetic sounds are used in the forms of gunshots, and other physical activities in the film. The score also progresses with the Joker, and at the start it is almost sad, like him, and then progresses into madness, so it becomes more grand and crazy. 

EDITING

• Editing in the movie is made to almost emulate movies of the 1970's so it is made without a lot of cuts, and contains scenes with little to no cutting to create the same feeling as movies from the time period. 

ELEMENTS OF GENRE IN IT

• The movie features a lot of crime obviously, and depicts a lot of violence and schemes by the characters in the movie for their own personal gain. It also feature angles and movements seen a lot in movies of this genre.

WHAT I LIKED

• It is a really great movie with a lot of great aspects to it. It does not rely to heavily on the crime part of the genre, and more on the character of the Joker, and how the people around him shape him up to be the way he ends up being at the end of the movie. I liked that it used common things in the genre to tell a slightly different story than what others in the genre would. 

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE

• Something that I didn't really like is that in its attempts to demonstrate the fall of the Joker into madness, it sometimes creates a goofy effect that take away from the overall feeling of the movie. 

Genre Research (Nightcrawler)

CAMS

• A- Angles in the movie are usually wide, and separated from the character, and the usage of two shots and over the shoulders are barely even used in the movie, this is done to create isolation in the character.
• M- Tracking shots are often used to follow the main character, Lou, around as he walks around during the movie.
• S- Sound is mostly diegetic and it allows the audience to feel as if they are with the character, especially since its at night and very isolated.

CLAMPS

• C- Costumes in the movie are clothing that regular people would wear in everyday life as the movie takes place during current day America
• L- The lighting in the movie is very dark, as the majority of the movie takes place during the night, so the lighting is that of light posts and the lights often seen outside during the night, making it a very natural lighting. 
• A- The acting in the movie is very intense, and the main actor, Jake Gyllenhaal, gives a very creepy performance, with his character slowly descending into madness and infatuation with his job. 
• M- The make-up is much like the costumes as in that it is very light and meant to show everyday people, so there is not much make up. 
• P- Props used in the movie are the main characters camera, technology like computers and phones, as well as cars both civilian and police cars.
• S- The setting of the movie is current day Los Angeles, and the areas through it and close to it. 

SOUND

• The movie features a lot of different types of sound, mostly diegetic though, as it creates a more realistic feeling in the movie. The soundtrack is very dark, and fits well with the theme of the movie, with it being so dark, it reflects not only the lighting of the movie but the overall feeling of it as well. 

EDITING

• The editing in Nightcrawler is very reminiscent of movies in the same genre but it is very different as well. It consists of sequences with a lot of jump cuts, but also contains long sequences where cutting is very few and far in between making the audience feel as if they were a nightcrawler as well, following leads, and getting stories.

ELEMENTS OF GENRE IN IT

• Nightcrawler is a very dark and mysterious movie that truly fits into the crime genre. from the overall plot of the movie that truly fits in into the crime genre. The movie has very dark lighting, something very commonly found in crime movies, and it features very dramatic and crazy acting that drives the story forward.

WHAT I LIKED

• I liked the overall movie a lot, and it was a very enjoyable movie. The dark themes and the dark descent from the main character. It definitely fit in into the crime genre and I would definitely use it as an inspiration for the project that I will be making.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE

•  There really was not anything major that I did not like in the movie, and I felt that what I did not like were just small little nitpicks that really did not effect the overall movie, and its themes or what I took away from it
  
  

Deciding Genre

After full consideration of the three genres that I did research on, I have come to a decision on which genre I will use for my film. I will be making my project as part of the crime genre. I think that it is the only genre that would truly fit and make the best out of my pitch idea. It is a genre that I am truly interested in and would put in all my effort to accurately create. The crime genre is one that i find very intriguing and would love to attempt to create. I also feel it will be a little easier to do so effectively as a one man team, and would not require a lot of help from other people, something that the other genres did not allow me to do. I am very excited to continue and do more research on the project and finally get to it.

Different Genres

ACTION GENRE

• Movies of this genre usually have an abundance of long shots, or wide shots in order to demonstrate the action effectively. They often do tracking movements as well in order to move alongside the characters to truly feel the action and create a sense of moving with them through their perspective. Sound in movies like these are often diegetic noises such as walking and punching, as well as guns and explosions. 
• Common types of costumes in these movies are often of the current time period, and made to be comfortable or suitable for action, i.e. jackets, shirts, suits, etc. Lighting in action movies seems to often be natural, as most of the time, the action is taking place outside, meaning that the lighting has to match the setting that they are in. The acting has to be serious, but also requires the actors to do a lot of stunts and action, so often times stunt doubles are used. The make-up in these types of movies is fairly light, with only the use of fake blood for cuts and bruises that the characters might get. Setting for action movies vary greatly, but they mostly take place outdoors in the streets of major cities, or maybe inside in a warehouse or agency building where fighting and action take place. 
• Sound in these movies is mostly diegetic with sounds of guns and explosions, as well as punches and kicks. They often include very lively score that complement the action, and have very energetic soundtracks and background music.
• Editing in these movies is usually very fast paced including a lot of jump cuts and action match. They help accentuate the action and create a fast pace.
• Some elements of this genre that I like is the fast pace seen in them and the action scenes, as they create a very interesting type of film. 
• Some elements I do not like is that if the film relies to heavily on action, and not enough on story and acting, it can become quite a dull experience that becomes less engaging to the audience. So it can become challenging for an action movie to become very entertaining if it only delivers on the action part of the genre

COMEDY GENRE

•  Movies of the comedy genre usually use angles that focus more on the characters and their dialogue, therefore it is common to find medium close ups and over the shoulder while watching comedy movies. Camera movements aren't as common but there could be use of pans to demonstrate reaction to certain moments in a comedic fashion. The sound in these movies could be both diegetic and non-diegetic as there are often sounds that are used to make the comedy funnier.
• Costumes in comedy movies mostly range from every day clothing that any regular person would have to comedic clothing that is out of the ordinary. Lighting in comedic movies is usually very bright and energetic in order to create a happy move to encourage the comedy found in the movie. Acting in comedy movies is, as expected, very comedic, meaning that a lot of actions and moments are exaggerated to create a sense of humor within the scene and to get that across to the audience. Makeup is similar to the costumes as it can vary from either day to day realistic makeup, to extremely goofy and comedic makeup depending on the setting and theme of the movie. Settings are usually normal households, or settings that are relatable to everyday people. 
• Sound in comedy movies is usually a combination of diegetic and non diegetic sounds, as the sounds from the actors are all mostly kept in while still using sounds without origin in the screen in order to create a bigger comedic effect. Scores in these movies are usually very lighthearted and goofy, much like the soundtracks. 
• Editing in comedy movies has to be fast paced and dynamic in order to create effective comedy and keep the audience entertained without running the risk of boring them. Therefore there are a lot jump cuts and cuts that fasten the pace.
• Things that I enjoy from this genre is mostly everything, as I find that a comedy movie can be one of the funnest experiences to watch and see on film. The fast paced humor and the great use of editing in some films makes this genre one of, if not the best genre of movies. 
• Some things that I do not enjoy in these types of films, similar to my problems with actions movies is that if not done properly, the comedy can have the opposite effect it desires and create a truly horrific movie. Therefore the comedy has to be very well done, and most often than not its not, so truly great comedic movies are unfortunately very few and far in between. 

Genre Powerpoint

 This was a PowerPoint that I had to make a couple of months ago. The PowerPoint was made to research the crime genre. I chose crime because i enjoy those types of movies and they interest me. We had to do research about several thing in the genre we were researching. We were instructed to look up camera angles and movements commonly found. We were told to look up sound and editing in theses types of movies. Afterwards we had to describe what we liked about the genre and what we did not like.

Choosing the Top Pitch

I have cut down my decision to two pitch ideas. The first one being "Would you murder others if it meant your own personal safety". And "What would you be willing to sacrifice if it meant gaining all you desire, money, and fame".

For the first pitch, "Would you murder others..." I really have great ideas, and have a very vivid picture of what I can do with it. It can be very ambiguous and mysterious, and can allow me to do a lot of work even if I am working by myself. I also find it a very interesting topic, and feel that even the first 2 minutes, which is what we are supposed to do, could be very captivating. However, there could be some drawbacks to it. I'm not really great at editing yet, so for something like this, I would have to put in a lot of effort in order to accomplish it effectively. I would also have to make sure to give a good performance as for this I would only act and film by myself, and to do so I need to make sure to do a very convincing job. There are many things that I would like to do with this pitch idea, and I feel like I could deliver on it very effectively. However, if I am not careful, the amount of work might backfire, and the film might not come out as good as I want it to be.

For the second pitch "What would you be willing to sacrifice.." I feel like it could make for a more compelling story. There would be a lot more dialogue, and would make it easier to fill the two minutes. This would create a more intricate story, that I feel could captivate the audience easier. I am working on this by myself though, so I would have to find people willing to do it for little to no recompense, and that might be difficult. With more dialogue also comes more editing, and that could be quite the challenge for me. I feel like this pitch could also present more ideas for the movie, and allow me to touch on more themes, like family and values. The pitch I think is something I would like to do and would be creatively fulfilling. However, I don’t know if it is realistically achievable by one person. This is creative ya good idea but maybe a little unrealistic for a one man team.
Therefore, I have decided to go with the first pitch. I believe it is a realistic pitch that I can accomplish with the little to no assistance that I will get. This pitch will allow me to create a movie that I am happy with. It will be a challenge but I am willing tot ale the risk. I look forward to creating this project. I truly have a lot of ideas for the project so I believe it will turn out exactly how I want it to.

Starting the Final Project

My name is Emilio De Hoyos, I am a 17 year old senior from Fort Lauderdale High School. I have attended Fort Lauderdale High School for all my four years of High School.  I was born on May 28, 2002 in Colombia. I moved to the US when I was ten years old as my dad got a great job opportunity. I've always been interested in the arts and story telling, so movies have always been very interesting to me. Some of my favorite genres in movies are Sci-Fi and action, as I find them very interesting and entertaining. I don't really see myself doing this as a career, but making films is fun, and a good hobby to have. I am nervous but excited to finally start on the final project. I am working alone for this project.
In my time in this class I have learned and improved on many things in film-making. I learned a lot about camera angles and movements, the reason for them, and how they affect the movie. I learned about editing, as I had never edited anything before. I learned a lot about the actual filming process and the collection of data. I got better at planning and creating storyboards. I improved my ability to come up with ideas for films and videos, as I never really did anything of the like before. I also learned about the equipment necessary to create movies, and how crucial all of it is. This class has been very interesting, and though there has been a lot more work than what I was anticipating, it has been a blast to create these videos, and create this final project. I look forward to what the project will look like, and hope that all my growth will be apparent in it.
For this project we have to create three pitches. Pitches are terms to describe what films are in 25 words or less. Pitches serve as a way to get an idea out there fast, and effectively. For my pitches I created the following; Would you be able to murder others if it meant your own personal safety. How would you live your life if your memories started to fade away? And, for the final pitch, what would you be willing to lose in order to gain all you desire, money, and fame.
